19th September 2004:
Sometimes it appears that the Raison d’tre of the George W. Bush presidency is simply to whet the appetite of the otherwise silent majority of commentators typing away on their personal websites. This is part of his speech at last month’s Republican GOP:
I am running for president with a clear and positive plan to build a safer world and a more hopeful America. I am running with a compassionate conservative philosophy …
Hmmm, go on, George.
The story of America is the story of expanding liberty: an ever-widening circle, constantly growing to reach further and include more. Our nation’s founding commitment is still our deepest commitment: In our world, and here at home, we will extend the frontiers of freedom.
I disagree. George W. Bush is more than this vision. His rising stock of grand ideas - today he announced a “democracy fund” to be adminsitered by the United Nations - contributes as much to the tickling of the collective funny bone as to the building of a “community of net critics”
By his very ludicrousness, George W. Bush functions as the condition for the possibility of freedom of expression in its various forms. It’s not that far-fetched. After all, American Vice-Presidents such as Al (”I took the initiative in creating the Internet”) Gore have an outstanding track record in innovating innovative innovations.
To be precise, George W. Bush is the very embodiment of freedom.
Heck, George W. Bush is freedom.
