Have just returned from the States; it was quite an adventure. The stay was made all the more enjoyable and productive by the company and hospitality of Yudson and Darnell, both of whom helped to focus and simplify!
In the hierarchy of musical talent, standards are set by increasing amplifier size. Opened by an unbilled band with Jam/Clash-heavy influence, the show at a far flung LA club called Spaceland progressively ate itself up the musical chain. New York’s Radio 4 played an hour long set filled with a mixture of punk/funk rhythms. Girls against Boys headlined with their non-melodic, paralysis inducing noise. A special mention for Ballyrag, an unsigned curbside local L.A. band who played their hearts out on the promenade.
Post-Westerbergian high jinx, high on my list of novelty reading is the long-awaited Our band could be your life, a biographical history of the 1980s American indie-underground music scene as forged by a dozen pioneering bands.
